Feeling lousy about your writing career? Things could always be worse. Consider, for instance, this list of 47 famous literary alcoholics and addicts, most of whom died a nasty, brutish death.

Life compiled the list and somehow overlooked most of my favorite authors, including Raymond Carver, Augusten Burroughs, and Mary Karr.

What the hell? No wonder Life died out.
